5 Great Winter Sports You Should Try

Skiing and snowboarding aren’t the only enjoyable two sports in winter. Depending on your budget and goals, there are a plethora of other winter sports that you can get into. Some can be done regularly, while others are more of a once-a-year experience that is nonetheless fun, exhilarating, and great for your body and mind. From the heart-pumping thrills of snowkiting to the technique-driven magnificence of ice skating, here are five amazing sports that will keep you warm in winter.

1 Ice Climbing

For those who love a challenge, few sports will put you to the test better than ice climbing. While you won’t be moving very fast, you’ll still feel an adrenaline rush throughout each session as your body and mind is put to the test. The U.S. is home to many great ice climbing locations, making it more accessible than some other winter sports.

2 Fat Biking

Also known as winter mountain biking, the sport rose to prominence in Alaska around the late 1990s. The tinny tires found on mountain bikes of the time were unsuitable for traversing the snow and ice. This is when Alaskan local Mark Gronewald stepped in and installed wide or “fat” tires that provided much better traction. Today, you can enjoy fat biking at just about every winter resort, as it has become a common part of their rosters. If you happen to become very good at fat biking, there’s even an annual Winter Mountain Bike National Championship that you can enter.

3 Snowkiting

Snowkiting is just like kiteboarding on the ocean – except you don’t have to worry about dealing with the hassle of getting back on the water when you fall or sharks. It’s an exhilarating combination snowboarding and a bit of flying, which is arguably the best part, as this is when you can perform tricks and feel truly free in the air.

4 Ice Skating

Ice skating is one of the few sports that can either be riveting or relaxing. You can zoom around the rink at full speed, performing great twists, jumps, and turns. Or, you could slide around and socialize with your fellow ice skaters. Couple in the fact that you don’t have to buy any expensive equipment and you have a winter sport that everyone can enjoy. One thing you will need is a decent pair of skates. It would be wise to invest in a pair of the best figure skates from the get-go, as this will save you money in the future and keep you comfortable on the ice.

5 Skijoring

Your canine friend might be particularly pleased with your sporting choices if you decide to get into skijoring. The premise is simple. Pick up a pair of skis, proper towing apparatus, and a dog (or more than one dog!) that’s bursting with energy. Skijoring also has its world championship, so there’s potential for you to do something great here.
